ORPHEUS AND
THE ANGEL
Music of Purcell and Marais
The concert
The program illuminates two famous composers separated by country and culture, both at the
peak of their art: Henry Purcell, master of the theater and anthem, known as the "English
Orpheus," and Marin Marais, French viol virtuoso and composer, said to "play like an angel"
and whose music began the "empire of the viol."
